Tatiana explains her latest single: “Whatcha Gonna Do?”
When I was a little girl, I would visit Poland every summer. Even though these were communist times, I developed a deep love and respect for Poland and its people. I was especially struck by their bravery in WW2 fighting against the Nazis, and my awe over this courage has grown over the years.
For my latest song, “Whatcha Gonna Do?” I was inspired by our current reality, and by an excerpt from Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn’s “The Gulag Archipelago”:
“The line separating good and evil passes not through states, nor between classes, nor between political parties either — but right through every human heart.”.
While visiting Warsaw in the fall of 2022, I was reminded of the terrible impact of war and communism, but was also encouraged. I witnessed how the Poles took in refugees from Ukraine, despite a challenging history in the region. I marvel at how the city was rebuilt from dust, and now is a thriving center for art and business. They have overcome so much, and have become stronger.
Now in my new home of Miami, I am surrounded by Polish people, Russians, Ukrainians, Belarusians, Czechs, and more. Here, we are not divided by the wars those governments (and the central banks) have forced upon us. We cannot be so easily taken apart again by psychopaths that have risen to power, as our ancestors once were.
We share culture, food, and stories, we help each other, and we support each other, and I think that’s what we should be aiming for.
I chose to create this song in Warsaw as a reminder of the risk we are taking, the courage that is needed, and the history that comes before us. Humanity doesn’t want to repeat those dark days. I want to remind the listener that there is a reason to push back before it is too late. We have divinity inside of us, and no one is coming to save us.
